EBLAST: November 18th, 2021 - #21-75

Hello Ontario Trainers,

It has been a little bit since our last Blast, but that has not been because there is nothing worth talking about regarding training in the fire service. As an executive we decided to catch our breath after such a busy September that finished on a high with our Virtual Training Officers Workshop! It was an amazing week that delivered a great deal of information to everyone that joined in. Nick Martin was excellent as our keynote speaker on the topic of being “Combat Ready”. Plans are already starting for next year and we are excited to see what will be on the calendar for that. ___________________________________________________________________________ WEBSITE As most of you have probably seen by now, we have launched our new website! Initial comments are that it looks amazing. If you haven’t had the opportunity to view it yet then please go to https://www.firetraining.ca/ and have a look around. There is limited content as we are adding things as we go, but this is the time to enroll or renew your membership so that as the site grows you can have access to that info. ___________________________________________________________________________ MEMBERSHIP Speaking of membership. This Blast is a perfect example of why your department needs a membership. Normally our Blasts are only accessible to members through the site. Since it is still developing we thought we would send this out to everyone as a reminder of the information and networking available through OAFTO. Also available to members on the website are features such as meeting minutes, presentations, and notifications. It’s an effective way to stay up on things happening within the province regarding fire service training.

GRANTS/FUNDING

Like most things in life nothing happens without having the funds to do what needs to be done. OAFTO is fortunate to have many different organizations that believe in what we do and support us financially. We would like to express our thanks to the following supporters for their generous contributions:

Trans Canada Energy - $10000

Enbridge - $7500

MENTAL HEALTH

Thanks to Al Brodie for highlighting this report from FF Close Calls. It’s a great presentation on the devastation of what has happened out west over the past few years and how first responders are trying to cope.

***SPECIAL REPORT: FIREFIGHTER TRAUMA***

With climate change fueling lengthier wildfire seasons and mega-blazes devour forests and rural communities, researchers have documented increasing mental health struggles among those on the front lines.
